Lavandera

10.02.2025 by landys

Lavandera connects to her existing series of installations Floor is Lava. In the process of collecting materials, Roimola deepens into the social, cultural and economic context of each country and the relationship between art, landscape, environmental crisis, identity and poverty.
The action of washing the black plastic, surface of the mountain, reminds the poetic and powerful images of Lavadeiras, a trade carried out by poor indigenous, black and mixed-race women in Latin America who had the burden of washing the dirt produced by the most favored classes while they were exploited or enslaved.

Roimola invited the public to spend a moment connecting to the Earth in the street of San Paulista. “By washing the dirty plastic we have a possibility to understand the amount of waste and harm done to nature as well as how by small actions we can give the power back. Cleaning plastic and the cycle of energy in this process is an act of care” says the artist. The work invites the viewer to face themselves in relation to nature. When the work is done as a community, it is possible to influence the attitude of society in the midst of this climate disaster. The work gives a tangible moment, a physical way to deal with feelings of inadequacy related to the eco-catastrophe. Sharing work with others feels liberating and highlights collective responsibility for the environment.

Lado Animal

In the dreams that translated into the series Lado Animal, her nails got sharp, her eyes became darker and she could see in the darkness. Her hearing got sharper and she could breathe under the water. But it comes with a cost; walls begin to suffocate her, indoor air doesn’t fill her lungs and she begins to destroy all the furniture.

Series consists of 10 works.

Landscapes

27.09.2022 by landys

Dreaming of multiple homes, Landscapes on earth. Long hair in the work takes real and imagined forms like a bundle of receptors. The long, black hair of the artist has always been the bridge to her unknown past life and ancestors in Colombia. Every nation has different teachings, but long hair always represents spirit, strength, connection, and identity. It’s an old saying: The longer your hair, the closer connection you have to the earth.

Produced by Finnish National Museum.

Floor is Lava

07.08.2022 by landys

The work process of the Floor is Lava requires sourcing, collecting and cleaning trash, which turns it into an object in which the intimate circumstances of lives of inhabitants and their societies relation to waste can be seen as well as the way they are treating the weakest of their society. In this process, a collective work is produced in which workers and their bodies become part of the recycling chain. In this way, the environmental concern and societal context intertwine and turn the mountains of Floor is Lava into a powerful political landscape.

Each of the Floor is Lava mountain is different, since the installation

always adapts to its surrondings – the material and the site specific aspects of it’s current location.

Floral Rivalry

22.03.2022 by landys

Floral Rivalry carries on Isola’s experience of nature as a ruler of all beings, even at a time when it has been cornered. I believe nature is reaching towards us, always finding a new way to flourish. Nature does not need us but we need nature.

Material for commission work for Marimekko is waste from construction site.

Anthro-po-cene

09.09.2020 by landys

Anthro-po-cene explores the inner relationship of the artist with nature and the relationship of nature with her. Humans are the most violent species on earth. The violence towards nature, other species, and its own members is constant and devastating. Mirroring one’s own actions, thoughts and privileges is painful and lonely work and it would be easier to look away. The hardest thing is to see and keep looking.

The artist uses the trash of the internet in her film and finds value in pixelated, abandoned materials as archeological material of our time.
